Inkjet: the replacement solution to pad printing.

Direct-to-device inkjet printing offers a range of advantages over traditional adhesive labels or pad printing for medical devices. One of the key benefits is enhanced traceability, allowing critical information such as serial numbers, batch codes, Unique Device Identifiers (UDI), barcodes, and regulatory markings to be printed directly onto the device itself. This significantly reduces the risk of labels becoming detached, damaged, or misplaced during manufacturing, sterilisation, transportation, or clinical use.

High-resolution inkjet technology delivers sharp, legible markings on complex surfaces without affecting device performance. As a non-contact process, it is ideal for delicate medical components and supports high-speed production with variable data capability. The result is improved traceability, enhanced patient safety, reduced material waste, and a more streamlined manufacturing process.

Unlike labels, direct printing removes the risk of peeling, detachment, or damage during storage and handling. High-resolution inkjet technology produces precise markings on curved surfaces while supporting high-speed production and variable data printing. It also reduces material consumption, simplifies manufacturing processes, improves traceability, and contributes to a more sustainable production environment.

Highly Regulated Products.

For highly regulated industries, direct inkjet printing provides a robust and reliable solution for product identification and compliance. By printing information directly onto the product surface, manufacturers can reduce the risk of label loss, damage, or tampering, ensuring critical information remains accessible throughout the product lifecycle.

Digital inkjet technology supports variable data printing, allowing information to be updated quickly and efficiently without interrupting production. In addition to improving traceability and compliance, direct printing helps increase manufacturing efficiency, reduce material waste, lower inventory requirements, and deliver a durable, cost-effective marking solution for regulated products and medical devices.

Piezo digital inkjet printing offers pharmaceutical manufacturers a flexible, high-precision solution for applying variable information, graphics and identification directly onto packaging and medical devices. The technology enables non-contact, digitally controlled printing onto substrates including blister foils, flexible films, cartons, plastics and medical-grade materials such as Tyvek.

For blister packs, piezo inkjet can enable high-resolution printing of batch numbers, expiry dates, barcodes, QR codes and unique serialisation data directly onto individual packs or even individual blister pockets. As well as serialisation and variable data digital inkjet is now being used to brand and provide colour options to traditionally mono applications.

Direct-to-device printing creates further opportunities across products such as inhalers, autoinjectors, pen injectors and other drug-delivery devices. Manufacturers can apply branding, instructions, identification codes and variable data directly to device surfaces, potentially improving product aesthetics while enabling late-stage customisation.
